Film 016 - My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

'Tonari no Totoro'

Director - Hayao Miyazaki

Sisters Sutsuke and Mei make an adventurous move to the countryside with their father, however, the adventure steps up when they meet their tree-living neighbor Totoro.

Although originally made in 1988 I've seen the 2005 re-dubbed version - I try to avoid dubbed versions of any film but it's not so bad in the case of animation. Beautifully drawn and directed as always from creator Hayao Myazaki and the 'Studio Ghibli' (A bit like the Disney Studio but with less frozen heads). It's a sweet and simple film for all the family but feels slightly incomplete to me as I was left wanting more from the story.

Apparently Totoro has become quite the icon, popping up in numerous other films and animations. So as Shaw Taylor would have said "Have you seen a 7 foot high, owl/rabbit/cat high-breed, carrying an umbrella and giving his occupation as either troll or woodland spirit? If so please get in touch straight away. And remember... keep 'em peeled!"...

Favorite Scene - The journey on the magical, if slightly disturbing, Catbus...

The Big List – 28 seen
