Film 007 - Godzilla (1954)

'Gojira'

Director - Ishirô Honda

"It's Alive!"

Isn’t it always the way – you wait forever for a mutant amphibian and then two come along at once! (Even if it did take me awhile to tell you about it!) In at number 31 on the chart is this, the mother of all rubber-suited-monster-movies!

At first I felt surprised that the Japanese would make a film about radioactive mass destruction so soon after the end on the Second World War. However, with the discovery of Serizawa’s oxygen killing formula comes the real dilemma – will using it to defeat the monster save the planet or condemn it if it to becomes a weapon? And before anyone corrects me I know that Godzilla isn’t a mutant. He’s a prehistoric monster awoken by atomic testing. (Maybe a teasmade would have put him in a better mood)

Classic scene – When Godzilla takes Dusty’ Springfield's advice and goes ‘Downtown!’ Rubber suit and models it may be but this is still an enthralling piece of film-making…
